Almond Banana Espresso Smoothie

I have become totally hooked on almond milk since going back to work after Christmas. What started as an effort to cut down on dairy in the week has turned into a full blown love affair with non-dairy milks. I've been trying different ones, Alpro, own brand, sweetened, unsweetened and I finally settled on Almond Breeze being my favourite. It has the nicest flavour and is so nice in my morning porridge. I saw that Foodies 100 were doing a competition with Almond Breeze, offering to send over 2 cartons to bloggers who wanted to come up with exciting breakfast smoothie ideas. As soon as I saw the competition I thought about these flavours and knew that's exactly what I wanted to do. 

This smoothie is so nice. It's not as thick as most smoothies because it's got milk instead of yogurt in and I think that makes it more drinkable. I managed to get all the flavours balanced so nothing was overpowering everything else. I got an immense sense of satisfaction out of this and it probably ruined me for the rest of the day. 

I didn't try it because I'm not eating chocolate right now but adding in a tablespoon of cocoa powder would be delicious as well. I'm sat drinking a chilled glass of it right now and it might be my new favourite drink. It kind of tastes like a cross between banana and butterscotch angel delight...but drinkable. It's heavenly. Plus, seeing as unsweetened Almond Breeze is only 29 calories per 200ml (compared to 98 in semi-skimmed milk) it's not that bad for you. It's a great thing to have for breakfast because it's full of slow release energy from the almond milk and butter. I've been drinking decaf coffee lately so if you don't want caffeine in your diet, just use that instead.

This recipe makes enough for 2 large glasses, or 4 small ones. I'm actually thinking I might try and turn this into an ice cream for another time, it was so good.

Almond Banana Espresso Smoothie

450ml unsweetened almond milk, chilled
50ml strong brewed coffee
2 ripe bananas, chopped
1 heaped tablespoon of almond butter

Throw everything in your blender, blend and pour into glasses.
So simple and so delicious.
